چکیده

The concepts of stability regions, Aand A(α)-stability – albeit based on scalar models – turned out to be essential for the identification of implicit methods suitable for the integration of stiff ODEs. However, for multistep methods, knowledge of the stability region provides no information on the quantitative stability behavior of the scheme. In this paper we fill this gap for the important class of Backward Differentiation Formulas (BDF). Quantitative stability bounds are derived which are uniformly valid in the stability region of the method. Our analysis is based on a study of the separation of the characteristic roots and a special similarity decomposition of the associated companion matrix.

A fourth-order Runge–Kutta method based on BDF-type Chebyshev approximations

In this paper we consider a new fourth-order method of BDF-type for solving stiff initial-value problems, based on the interval approximation of the true solution by truncated Chebyshev series. It is shown that the method may be formulated in an equivalent way as a Runge–Kutta method having stage order four. Themethod thus obtained have good properties relatives to stability including an unboun...

An Almost L-Stable BDF-type Method for the Numerical Solution of Stiff ODEs Arising from the Method of Lines

A new BDF-type scheme is proposed for the numerical integration of the system of ordinary differential equations that arises in the Method of Lines solution of time-dependent partial differential equations. This system is usually stiff, so it is desirable for the numerical method to solve it to have good properties concerning stability. The method proposed in this article is almost L-stable and...

Exponential fitting BDF algorithms and their properties

We present two families of explicit and implicit BDF formulas, capable of the exact integration (with only round-off errors) of differential equations which solutions belong to the space generated by the linear combinations of exponential of matrices, products of the exponentials by polynomials and products of those matrices by ordinary polynomials. Those methods are suitable for stiff and high...
